Non-monetizing YouTube channels are those that do not meet the requirements to earn revenue through the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). This can occur for several reasons, such as violations of YouTube policies, lack of originality, or failure to meet the required eligibility criteria.
Reasons for non-monetization
Here are the most common reasons why a channel may not be monetizing:
- Violations of Community Guidelines — Content that breaches YouTube's community guidelines—such as hate speech, graphic violence, or sexually suggestive material—can result in demonetization or even channel termination.
- Reused Content — Channels that largely rely on non-original content (e.g., clips from other creators' videos, TV shows, or compilations) are unlikely to qualify for monetization. YouTube prioritizes original and transformative content.
- Repetitive Content — Channels where videos are nearly identical in format, script, or visuals may be considered low-value and can lose monetization for lacking creativity or uniqueness.
- Lack of AdSense Setup — Some creators may meet YPP requirements but haven't linked an AdSense account or chosen not to monetize, resulting in a non-monetizing channel.
- Failure to Meet YPP Thresholds— To apply for monetization, a channel must meet one of the following:
- At least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 valid public watch hours in the past 12 months, or
- At least 1,000 subscribers and 10 million valid public Shorts views in the past 90 days
- Inactive Channels — YouTube may remove monetization from channels that are inactive for an extended period (e.g., no uploads or Community posts for 6 months or more).
What happens if a channel is demonetized?
Once a channel is demonetized, we allow a two-month window for the creator to resolve the issue and regain eligibility under YPP. During this time, you can:
- Appeal YouTube's decision (if applicable)
- Reapply to YPP after 30 days if your initial application was rejected
- If your reapplication is also rejected or you are suspended from YPP, you will need to wait 90 days before reapplying again
- Make changes to your content strategy to align with YouTube policies
- Add an AdSense account, if one was not previously connected
| Note You can appeal a YPP rejection or suspension within 21 days (or within 7 days if YouTube notifies you in advance of a scheduled suspension). A successful appeal reinstates your channel directly—you don't need to wait out the 90-day period. If the appeal is denied or not filed, the standard 30/90-day reapplication wait still applies. |
What if the channel remains demonetized?
If the channel does not regain monetization within the two-month grace period, we will proceed to unlink the channel from our MCN. This is in line with our network management standards, which require linked channels to be monetizing or actively working toward monetization eligibility.
What can partners do?
- Review the Earn tab in YouTube Studio for detailed policy feedback
- Take prompt corrective action to increase chances of reinstatement
- Communicate with us if you're actively working on recovery or need guidance
| Warning Failure to restore monetization within the timeframe may result in permanent removal from our network. |
